Association of South East Asian Nations

Introduction

The group of The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has ten member countries: Brunei, Indonesia, Philippines, Laos Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Cambodia Thailand and Myanmar, which aims to get cooperation with the politics, economics and society in the area. And then, by the year of 1996 and 1997, it was named as ASEAN plus Three. The Three East Asian Nations are: China, Japan and Korea. The first summit of ASEAN is 1976 , the first and important work was to strengthen the group itself and its economics as well as politics. It was 1993 that the Free Trade Area of ASEAN was established.

This dream of ASEAN was realized 25 years earlier. The great achievements of ASEAN in recent years make many people believe that ASEAN will play a significant role with the regional power. ASEAN will strengthen peace and stability in the region. On the other hand, that we cannot be so optimistic about the ASEAN in the future. The serious consequences of the economic crises have still affected the development of ASEAN. In addition, it also some various crises like the Indonesian forest fire and the sharp depreciation of the Thai. As a matter of fact, the member countries also have some problems with each others. Therefore, the ASEAN need to concentrate on this future challenges and give some recommendations about how to solve this problems. ASEAN must make itself strong enough to win the respect of the whole world. If ASEAN is strong, then it can have a meaningful role the international fora.
