The kinship system and women’s status

1.Introduction

A famous anthropologist, Raymond Scupin, claims the kinship system is an important method to modify of women in the tribes. In addition, Scupin suggests that women in some tribes have higher social and economic status than men with kinship systems. Matriarchal means that a female is the master of the family or a tribe. On the contrary, Patriarchal means that the male is the master of the family. In this paper, the tribes of Minangkabau and Yanomamo of will be taken to test whether Scupin’s theory is correct. The paper will compare the social and economic roles, of men and women in each society to illustrate the women and men’s status. And compare of the kinship system in each society.

 2.Compare of these two societies 

The Minangkabau are located in Indonesia, which are “best known for Matrilineal descent and the lame practice of merantau or outmigration”. In the ancient time, the Matrilineal is the foundation of many tribes (Eller, 2001). In this society women are the master of the family (Bodley, 2011). And the Yanomamo are located in Venezuela, which is a patrilineal society inheriting its blood line through the men (Chagnon, 2013).
